On our Runes and Divination page we tell you something about how to use your pendulum. Here we will begin a discussion on the use of a pendulum.
Always remember to ask your Higher Power which pendulum is right for you. Sit quietly and, if you are buying the pendulum from the internet, hold the picture of the pendulum in your mind. Ask: Is the right pendulum and is it made from the right material or stone? Listen to what you are being told. (That, for me, is one of the hardest things to do. I try to impose my will far too often, and end up going astray! Practice and patience have brought me closer to listening to the words of my Guides.) If you will allow it, the pendulum will pick you!
Once you have your pendulum, be sure to cleanse it, asking that all negative energy be removed from it and ask it to help you in your divining. After cleansing, a prayer must be said asking that all the answers you receive are truthful and that you are doing this for the good of all. Doing this will signal your intent and purpose to your guides.
Your pendulum, like you, may have certain characteristics that make it different from others. Start by practicing with your pendulum, asking if the up and down motion is for yes and if the side to side motion is for no. A circular motion usually signifies neutrality. Ready your pendulum by swinging it in a circular, slightly angular motion. You can start to know the action of the response by asking questions that you know the answer to already, like Is my name Denise? or Is today Tuesday?
Hold your pendulum 2 to 3 1/2 inches from the weight at the end. It is important to not restrict the movement the pendulum has and to not influence it. Do not hold your pendulum too far away from the weight or you may not be able to discern its answer or it may take too long to receive the response. Lean your elbow on the table above your scrying mirror or your left knee. Start your practice with the clearly yes or no questions like those outlined above and practice. If you are feeling ill or out of sorts you may want to wait until you feel clearer.
Have several questions handy and keep a notebook to write them and the responses you receive down to help you in your quest. You will know if the answers you receive are correct and truthful if you use your instincts. Accept only those that ring true. Remember, the truthful way is not always the easy way! Using the pendulum will, of course, be a tool to be used in conjunction with your spiritual way of life.
