Sweetgrass, also known as sweet flag, though hard to find, has been used in Native American ceremonies for generations. Traditionally used for smudging and purifying ceremonies, it has gained additional use in the rituals of many other traditions. It has been used for ailments of the stomach like dyspepsia, upset or sour stomach. In Russia, country people used to use it as an air purifier, to cleanse the air when sickness from cholera, typhus or the flu was present. It grows in the United States on the borders of ponds and marshes where the soil is constantly and moist.
